Reddish Brown Stag Beetle - Lucanus capreolus

This species is valued for its classic stag beetle appearance and clear sexual dimorphism. Larvae are large, white, C-shaped grubs that develop in decaying hardwood, especially oak, typically over one to two years. Adults are chestnut to dark reddish-brown; males have elongated, C-shaped mandibles used in contests with rivals, while females are smaller, sturdier, and equipped with shorter jaws for feeding and egg-laying.
